Citizen Direct at India Together: Relief for MP dalits and tribals

An Ekta Parishad district unit had organized a three day non-violent sit-in before the district collector’s office at Morena, MP, to protest against the atrocities committed by upper class families on tribal and dalit families in Shahapurkala village of Sablagarh tehsil in the state. Their complaint was that upper society people had taken away crops from dalit and indiegenous familes. The victims had earlier complained to the state�s revenue department and the Police, but no action was taken. Ekta Parishad advocates for and campaigns towards people’s control over livelihood resources such as land, water, and forests.

The victims families had submitted a memorandum for immediate action to the District collector on 30th of March and they started sit in before the district collector office at Morena with their whole families - men, women and children - from 3rd to 5th of April.

There were three meetings with the district collector, where the delegates of Ekta Parishad met with him on his invitation during the sit in. The district collector accepted all the demands of Ekta Parishad in last meeting held on 5th of April at 7.30 pm. The collector came to sit-in at 8.30 pm the same evening to affirm the acceptance of demands.

The collector has promised to take legal action against the alleged persons. He mentioned that all victim�s families will get one quintal (100 Kg) of wheat. He also promised the constitution of a committee to ensure the demarcation & physical possession of alloted land, agreed to provide Rs.35000 to seven girls for their marriage, release the widow pensions which has been pending, start the construction of roads, repairing of ponds under the food for work programme and employment, opening of an elementary education centre, implementation of free electricity schemes for indigenous and dalit families.
