April 2001: The early signs from the recently concluded Census of India are encouraging in many respects. • Southern states maintain strong success in population control.
• Literacy jumps in every state
• Overall population growth slows
• Highest growth rates in border states in the north-east
• Maharashtra passes truncated Bihar, nears 100 million.
• Kerala is the only state with decadal growth under 10%
• U.P. more populous than all but a few nations!
